WCC Chair
My support of the WCC-Lilly Travel Awards led to becoming a liaison and a member of the WCC. In 1994, I was asked to serve as Chair from 1995-1997. At that time, the WCC did not feel optimally influential or impactful within the ACS and wanted to do something about that. Using some strategic planning techniques that I learned at Lilly, and partnering with several of my WCC colleagues, we conducted two strategic planning sessions in 1994, and in 1995 launched a completely refreshed mission, vision, goals, and action plan for WCC:
VISION: To be leaders in attracting, developing and recognizing women chemists.
The new vision focused WCC’s efforts, and many programs blossomed forth. Women in Industry Breakfasts (Lissa Dulany) increased women nominations for National Awards (Deb McCarthy), members of the Board of Directors attended WCC luncheons (all WCC members), mid-career women chemist workshops and more. The WCC became LEADERS for the diversification of ACS in many ways, and we are all indebted to the dedication and commitment of that brave group who chose to lead the WCC in a new direction in 1995-1997.
